RIMOWA commissioned Benjamin Edgar to create an abstraction of their classic aluminum suitcase for their "As Seen By" group art exhibition, which began at Art Basel in Miami and subsequently traveled to various international cities. Inspired by an obsession with either “literalism” or maybe just reduction. The concept was create the most reduced version of a RIMOWA case by referencing what it started as - raw aluminum in a factory - and also what it ends as - this zeitgeist standard of the best suitcase. The logo of elegant travel perhaps. Theconcept was furthered by creating an over-engineered shipping pallet found in any factory, rendered in beautiful, hand-finished, Baltic Birch fine-grade plywood. Placed atop the pallet is the hand-finished, raw 6063 aluminum, referencing the solid extruded rounds of aluminum that represent the material's birth state before it's worked into sheets to construct a RIMOWA suitcase. The tubes were then organized in a pattern that appears almost as a high-resolution version of a blurred image of the instantly recognizable RIMOWA product if the viewer squints. Production assisntance from Max Arkin and Jordan Shepard.
