BENJAMIN EDGAR, AN OBJECT COMPANY © 2009–????

A sum greater than the parts of: material, process, approach, weight, temperature, durability, momentum, emotion, confusion, curiosity, contrast, sensation, humor, wit, culture, elegance, cotton, steel, aluminum, bronze, carbon fiber, wood, silicone, leather, nylon, ceramic, paper, resin, foam, rubber, paint, wax, plastic, mother of pearl, woven, milled, turned, coated, brushed, anodized, baked, cast, struck, molded, cut, sewn, adhered, stamped, etched, embossed, vulcanized, polished, abstracted.

Founded in 2009 by Benjamin Edgar Gott. The eponymous brand was created from a deep curiosity and love of specific materials, unique manufacturing processes, and the use of industrial design. The result of this never-ending curiosity is the never-ending series of objects offered by the brand. Abstract and often elegantly confusing everyday objects that prioritize emotional sensation first and functionality second with an intense focus on quality and an obsession with even unseen details.

Benjamin Edgar Gott

Benjamin Edgar Gott is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary designer — though his extensive body of work spans beyond any one-word label.

Fundamentally, Benjamin uses design to participate in the world around him. His primary project, literally named “An Object Company”, stands as the culmination of decade’s worth of research and development across varying processes and materials. He creates objects for life, lesiure, and emotion by a mix of irreverence, elegant confusion, exceptional materials, and an intense attention to detail. Each piece — whether to adorn the home, to wear, or to simply look at — balances the useful with the useless, inviting the opportunity to explore, dream, and look at the world around you from a different angle.

Benjamin got his start in the business world at the age of 17, during the first dot-com era. With no formal training or education, Benjamin taught himself software development, professionally merging information architecture and design. In the early 2000’s he exited the corporate world to push his own entrepreneurial limits.

In 2005, Benjamin co-founded THE BRILLIANCE! an influential blog from the early internet cultral scene with Chuck Anderson and Virgil Abloh.

In 2009, Benjamin founded Boxed Water as an alternative to wasteful plastic bottles. One of the most widely recognized of his projects, Boxed Water is merely another “object” to Benjamin, differing only in the scale and problem it attempts to solve.

Benjamin’s ongoing pursuit is to never lose curiosity.
